You should keep in mind that the card you send will be read by the family so it is important to take the time and write just the right message from the heart.Considerations

Design and message

Simple Condolences

Most Sympathy Cards are beautifully designed depicting landscape scenes, clouds, doves and flowers.  Most cards have messages on the front that will help you choose just the right words to express your sympathy e.g. With deepest sympathy, Thinking of you, With heartfelt sympathy, In our thoughts.

Card Size

Sympathy cards come in a variety of sizes.  You may decide to choose a larger card depending on the message you want to include.

Message

The message will depend on the relationship you have with the family and how well you knew the deceased, it is usually best to keep your message short and include phrases like “with heartfelt sympathy, “our thoughts and prayers are with you”, “our deepest condolences”, “I am sorry to hear of your loss”.  Try and remember that the family are in pain so avoid statements, “time will heal all wounds” or “it was their time to go”.  That may well be case but the family might not appreciate them especially at the start of the grieving process.

Examples

There are no words that I can say to ease your pain during this heart breaking time, I just want you to know that I am so sorry for your loss and my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time.

My deepest condolences, My heartfelt condolences, Please accept my deepest sympathy, Our condolences,

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of (Name)……………..  He/She,(name) was an amazing person who touched so many lives. She/he will be missed so much and our memories will keep …………… in our hearts forever.

Prayers/Verses

Some people may wish to add a prayer or verse to express their sympathy, if you do want to include a prayer or verse, make sure you are sensitive and it is appropriate depending on the family’s faith, e.g.

Gone from our sight, but never our memories. Gone from our touch, but never our hearts.

My deepest sympathy

May the memories you have keep your soul full and
the love that surrounds you help your heart heal

Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this heartbreaking time

Writing the Card

Take time when you are writing the card to make sure that the family can actually read your writing.  Always put your full name and address on the bottom, there is nothing worse for the family than not knowing who has sent the card.  Remember the family will want to thank you when they see you again.
